UK packaging laws have already changed. Is your business compliant?
Since October 2023, it has been illegal in England to supply customers with single use plastic cutlery, polystyrene cups and containers, plastic plates and bowls, and plastic straws.
Many small food businesses are still using banned items without realising it. Trading Standards can issue fines for non-compliance.

How the compliance check works
What does UK packaging law actually ban?
Since October 2023, businesses in England cannot supply customers with the following items:
- Single use plastic cutlery including knives, forks, spoons and chopsticks.
- Polystyrene cups and food containers.
- Single use plastic plates, trays and bowls when given directly to customers.
- Plastic straws and stirrers.
- Polystyrene lids for cups and containers.
These rules apply to all food businesses including restaurants, cafes, takeaways and food vendors.
There are no exemptions for small businesses. Many independent food operators are still unknowingly using banned items.
